Custom Android ROM Now Available for Nexus 7

CyanogenMod 13 Update: Custom Android ROM Now Available for Nexus 7

Nexus 7 can now be updated to the latest Android version via a custom ROM. A nightly build of CyanogenMod 13 is now available for the 2013 tablet, Team Android reported.

Co-developed by Asus and Google, the Nexus 7 is officially upgradable to Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, according to GSM Arena. However, those adventurous enough to try a custom firmware can use the CM13 ROM to have a Marshmallow OS experience.

According to Team Android, CM13 firmware brings in its own Theme Engine. Performance-focused, the CyanogenMod ROM also offers support for Multi-Window.

A new feature found on Marshmallow, Android Doze, is also provided in the nightly build of CyanogenMod13 update available for the Asus Nexus 7. However, since it is regarded as a Nightly, users might still experience initial bugs upon installing the firmware.

Another warning posted by Team Android is that updating the tablet via an unofficial release such as custom firmware will automatically render the warranty void. Furthermore, the update process will also likely to wipe out the device's entire memory.

Because of this, users are expected to secure a reliable recovery tool first before proceeding to install Android 6.0 Marshmallow update via CyanogenMod 13 ROM. Experts suggest the use of ClockWorkMod (CWM) or TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) to create a backup of essential files and settings saved in the Nexus 7 tablet.

It is also important that the Asus Google Nexus 7 has at least 80 percent battery level before installing the custom ROM. This is to prevent any power interruption issues as the update process is ongoing.

The Nexus 7 is packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4Pro paired with 2 GB of RAM and Quad-core Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz. For the GPU, the tablet is using Adreno 320.
The 7-inch Android tablet, which was released July 2013, has a screen resolution of 1200 x 1920p and a pixel density of 323 ppi, according to the specs list on GSM Arena. The display screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

Below is a review created by Marques Brownlee for the 2013 Nexus 7, as posted on his official Youtube account:

At the launch, the smartphone arrived with pre-installed with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Nexus 7 owners can opt for the official Android 6.0 OS or the CyanogenMod 13 Nightly to experience Google Android's Marshmallow goodies.
