OnePlus 3 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 ??

OnePlus may be looking at refreshing the OnePlus 3 with a newer model called the OnePlus 3 Plus or OnePlus 3S. According to sources in the OnePlus supply chain, the company is currently facing a supply shortage for the AMOLED panels used in the OnePlus 3 units as reported by Gizmo China.

The Soft Gold variant for OnePlus 3 is currently out of stock in India while the Graphite version only has two devices in the stock. The situation is considerably bad in the USA where the product page notes that the company will ship the product within 13 days at the time of writing with the Soft Gold variant out of stock. The delivery times in parts of Europe exceed more that four weeks according to user accounts on OnePlus forums. The Graphite version is out of the stock in China with only Soft Gold version available.

OnePlus is currently working on the problem with plans to replace the AMOLED panel with LCD panel. Even though we are not sure about any new device as outlined by OnePlus in the recent Redditt AMA but this makes sense.

In addition to replacing AMOLED Panel with LCD Panel, the company will add in the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, replacing the current Snapdragon 820 SoC. The supply chain source did not reveal any timeline for the launch of the new variant but considering the new SoC, the new version of the OnePlus 3 will be Daydream VR compatible.

Daydream compatibility will give the potential buyers a substantial reason to consider OnePlus 3 over the upcoming Google Pixel and Pixel XL. The rumours of the new device with the 6-inch display as reported by GSMArena also make sense. The increased screen size will give OnePlus the freedom to increase the battery size of the device, increasing the battery capacity of the device to improve on the initial offering.
